Young Performers 2015: The Lost Letter

26/2/2015

Comments

The letter Z has gone missing and nobody knows where it has gone. Worse than that, now it is lost, it can no longer be written or spoken. The Writer, who is desperate to write about a zippy zany zebra who has escaped the zoo, asks the other letters to help him find Z so they can all be reunited and he can finally finish his book. This story shows how everyone is important, even if they are the last letter in the alphabet.

For the past eight years in the Autumn I have sat down at my computer and written a script for The Young Performers. Sometimes I already have an idea in mind, other times I have to slowly think about it until it grows into a play.

This year the idea was already there. The Lost Letter almost was the script I wrote for the 2014 Young Performer's production. However, the ideas weren't quite together and I had a plan of how rework the story of The Prince and the Pauper into The Princess and the Pauper (It needed more adaptation than just the gender of the protagonists), so The Lost Letter was temporarily abandoned.

At some point I briefly mentioned the almost-script to Sam Roscoe, the director of the Young Performers, and she asked that I write it for 2015. I gave it some time, the ideas started to come and soon I had a whole script, just a year after the idea first occurred to me.

I always enjoy writing for the Young Performers it is a chance to let my imagination take over and make up something fun and silly but with a strong message.

I try to remember the stories I enjoyed as a child and the ones the children I know enjoy today. The Lost Letter involves the cast blowing a lot of raspberries— an idea inspired by my nephew.

By the time it is the performances, about eight months after I wrote the script, I have usually forgotten the details and it is a joy to rediscover it. I like to see which parts of the story the young actors particularly like, what moment make them laugh. On top of that,  I am always impressed by the enthusiasm and level of performance that the group delivers and I look forward to seeing the results of everyone's hard work in producing The Lost Letter this June.
